The Dhamar Museum Recovery and Documentation Project
Dhamar, Yemen
The Dhamar Museum, one of Yemen’s largest and most important regional museums, was severely damaged by the recent conflict. To help the museum and its collection recover, the rubble was cleared, and the buried and burned artifacts were salvaged. Then, about 6,000 objects were cleaned, sorted, documented, inventoried, and prepared for long-term storage. This operation provided employment for 69 local Yemeni professionals, while more than a dozen local archaeology students received hands-on field experience in emergency recovery and documentation methods.
