Reconstruction of the Al Badr Palace and the Taiz National Museum
Taiz, Yemen
The Al-Badr and Imam Palaces are excellent examples of Ottoman-era buildings and part of the Taiz National Museum complex. This ancient city, once the cultural capital of Yemen, suffered major damage during the Civil War. The building was completely burnt et had partially collapsed, and a significant part of the museum’s collection of 45,000 artifacts was looted. Only 15,000 survived under the rubble. To safeguard this heritage, ALIPH has supported the restoration of the monument and of its collection implemented by World Monuments Fund. Outside the building’s restoration, the objective is also to recover the missing artifacts, to create a new museography, and to provide training for the Yemini staff in conservation and restoration techniques.
