Conservation of St Hilarion Monastery, Gaza Strip
Gaza, Palestine
The Saint Hilarion Monastery is one of the oldest and largest monasteries in the Middle East. A restoration project launched in 2020 and completed in 2022 first implemented emergency stabilization measures. These were followed by a large-scale renovation of the crypt, the baptistery, and the church’s marble pavement. This restoration process included a training programme in partnership with two universities, during which time, technicians from departments of architecture and archaeology participated in practical on-site work. In addition, skilled workers were given specialized instruction on restoration and preservation techniques as well as blacksmithing. These activities raised public awareness of the importance of cultural heritage.
Since the completion of this project, the current war in Gaza has had a significant impact on Gazan heritage. Various archaeological sites, religious buildings, historic houses, museums, archives, and libraries have been destroyed or damaged. ALIPH has adopted emergency measures to be implemented as soon as possible, without undermining the priority for delivering humanitarian aid and protecting civilians.
