Preliminary study of the collections at Kaspi Municipality Museums
Kaspi, Georgia
The five-month project assessed the immediate needs of four museums located in the Kaspi municipality, bordering the South Ossetia region. The Kaspi Giorgi Khorguashvili Museum of Local Lore, founded in 1960, holds a collection of 37,900 regional archaeological and ethnographic artifacts. The Lamiskana Jambakur-Orbelians Palace-Museum, located in an 18th century palace, holds an ethnographic, fine art, documentary collection of over 2,850 artifacts. Two memorial house museums are dedicated to prominent figures in education, military, and music in the history of Georgia. Their conditions had never been assessed nor documented and needed a careful attention to avoid further deterioration.
The assessment involved a careful study of the museum environments and mycological studies to determine the precise needs. In addition to the purchase of relevant furniture, the museum employees were trained in preventive conservation and packing for moving of artefacts.
